If you already hold a PPL or LAPL(A), you have a major head start. Adding a Sailplane Pilot Licence (SPL) is significantly faster and more straightforward than starting from zero. Many power pilots complete the transition in a surprisingly short time — especially when training is intensive and individual.
One important advantage: holders of an aeroplane licence receive credit for the four common theoretical subjects (Air Law, Human Performance, Meteorology and Communications). This means you only need to sit the sailplane-specific subjects — four fewer exams than an ab-initio student. The theoretical examinations can be taken at the club, and you may pass the subjects one by one rather than all at once.
At Alpine Soaring we specialise in efficient conversions for powered pilots. Daily flying in the excellent conditions of the southern French Alps allows you to progress continuously instead of waiting for weekends and suitable weather at home. You will quickly regain the pure stick-and-rudder skills, energy management and silent flight that many power pilots miss.
The result? A new rating, sharper flying abilities that transfer back to your aeroplane, and access to some of the best mountain and wave soaring in Europe.
