Winch Launch Rating SFCL.155
Duration
3 to 5 days
Level
Licensed SPL Pilot
Certification
EASA SPL Part-SFCL.155
Course Overview
Winch launching is the fastest, most eco-friendly, and cost-effective way to take to the skies. Our winch rating program follows the official FFVP methodology at Avignon-Pujaut airfield, adhering to EASA Part-SFCL requirements to ensure a smooth, safe, and rigorous learning curve.
Throughout the course, you will master every phase of the winch launch: ground roll under high acceleration, pitch attitude management during initial climb, tracking the optimal ascent trajectory, and clean cable release at the top.
Emphasis is placed on Threat and Error Management (TEM) and emergency procedures. You will practice simulated winch launch interruptions and cable break scenarios at low, medium, and high altitudes to build instinctive, reliable safety reflexes.
Course Syllabus
Winch Launch Theory & Safety
In-depth study of winch launch aerodynamics according to FFVP methodology, airframe limitations (max winch speed Vw), ground signals, cockpit checks (CRIS), and safety briefings focused on Threat and Error Management (TEM).
Ground Roll, Takeoff & Initial Climb
Mastering directional control during rapid acceleration, keeping wings level, achieving smooth lift-off without pitch overshoot, and transitioning safely to the initial climb attitude.
Optimal Ascent Trajectory
Establishing and holding the steep climb pitch according to wind conditions, continuous airspeed monitoring, crosswind drift correction, and maintaining perfect flight symmetry via the yaw string.
Top of Launch & Cable Release
Identifying the top of the launch, relaxing stick pressure to unload g-forces, manually releasing the cable, and visually verifying cable separation before soaring.
Emergency Procedures & Cable Breaks
Intensive practical training for simulated launch failures at low, medium, and high altitudes: immediate pitch-down to safety attitude, airspeed recovery, and quick decision-making (straight-ahead landing or abbreviated circuit).
Solo Flights & Rating Endorsement
Final consolidation in dual flight control, followed by performing the required solo winch launches under instructor supervision to obtain the official EASA SPL winch launch endorsement.
