The teaching methodology of the French Gliding Federation

The teaching methodology of the French Gliding Federation (FFVP) is built upon three fundamental "pillars" that transform flying from a set of reflexes into conscious risk management.

1. CBT (Competency-Based Training) shifts the focus from pure technical execution of maneuvers to the development of 7 key competencies. These include not only Piloting (PIL) and Procedures (PRO) but also non-technical skills: Communication (COM), Situation Awareness (COS), Workload Management (GES), and Decision-making (DEC). The instructor evaluates not just the technical outcome of a maneuver, but the student’s "path of thought" (cheminement de pensée), helping them independently identify possible courses of action.

2. The Risk Zones Model teaches pilots to recognize their psychological and physiological limits. Effective learning occurs in the "marginal zone" (zone limite), but flight safety requires the ability to decide to renounce a maneuver in time and return to the "comfort zone". This forms the basis of a safety culture where enjoyment is impossible without security.

3. TEM (Threat and Error Management) provides a methodology for identifying hazards and establishing protective barriers. By using a systematic approach (such as the PME acronym — Pilot, Machine, Environment), pilots learn to detect threats and errors before they lead to an undesirable state.

This symbiosis of concepts develops the discipline and flexibility required for safe soaring.
